Antidepressant Controversy

If Bipolar Disorder is suspected you will want to use caution when using anti-depresants since there is information that these meds can cause a worsening of symptoms for many people.

On October 15, 2004 the FDA directed drug manufacturers to include a "black box" warning about the increased risk of suicide an in children and teens who use SSRI antidepressants.

Anti-depressants can also cause withdrawl symptoms and may have addictive properties for some people. When discontinuing an AD some people experience SSRI Withdrawl Syndrome and often experience "things getting worse before getting better".

However, even with all the things to be concerned about, there are some people with Bipolar who are unable to become stable and functional until the doctor tries an antidepressant.
