Antidepressants

Antidepressant medications come in a variety of formulations with the newer types being selective reuptake inhibitors for major neurotransmitters, serotonin (SSRI), dopamine (SDRI), norepinephrine (SNRI) and gaba.. These types of medications may address one or combinations of these neurotransmitters and in varying potencies. These medications are used to treat depression in unipolar depression and can be used to treat persistent depression in other mood disorders. There is the potential of manic activation and reported suicidality with these medications when administered to bipolar disordered patients. This is a component that calls for careful consideration and monitoring if this course of therapy is taken with a patient that is or may have a bipolar disorder. Additionally, there are some reports of a higher rate of suicide when these medications are dosed to pediatric patients. It is not yet determined if these incidents are due to the medications or progression of the illness but most certainly should be a caution and consideration.

On October 15, 2004 the FDA directed drug manufacturers to include a "black box" warning about the increased risk of suicide an in children and teens who use SSRI antidepressants.
