Homeschooling the Challenging Child by Christine M. Field
If you are new to homeschooling or are in the early stages of identifying and dealing with your child's learning difficulties, “Homeschooling the Challenging Child” offers lots of information, resources and good practical advice. Christine M. Field, a Christian author who always brings this perspective to her writing, spends the majority of this book helping parents to identify their child's learning disabilities and differences. Getting a handle of your child's unique learning style and needs is the first step toward successful homeschooling. She covers various learning disabilities from ADHD to Dyslexia, different learning styles and the law concerning special education. At times, she tries to cover so much that the book seems a rehashing of information from other sources, lists of resources and explanations of other people's research and theories. Ms. Field does have some personal experience to share, however. One of her adopted daughters is a challenging child. Her personal anecdotes and recommendations for dealing with the emotional stress of raising and educating a challenging child are the best part of the book. Homeschooling the Challenging Child is 80 percent informational and 20 percent inspirational. It is a good resource for those who are new to this challenge. It left me with little that I didn't already know, but uplifted to keep on going.
