Coping with Anxiety

Dr. Fristad,

My son who is diagnosed with bipolar and GAD was finally stabilized on a number of medications (Seroquel, Abilify, Lithium, Gabitril and recently Luvox was added). He is on 700 mg. of Seroquel.  After doing some research, I am concerned about the Seroquel because of its implications in diabetes on-set. Do you have any thoughts on what might be a better substitute? His most challenging symptom at this point is anxiety.

 Thanks,

 Nancy

Dear Nancy,

Following the Treatment Guidelines published in 2005, I would wonder if your son is receiving CBT for his anxiety?  It is as effective as medication for anxiety reduction, and doesn’t produce hypomania, always the risk of an SSRI to treat the anxiety.  If the anxiety abates, you might find that you will be able to lower some of the mood meds, as anxious symptoms can trigger mood symptoms.  Good luck!

Sincerely,

Dr. Fristad
