Cyclothemia

Cyclothymia is a more moderate cycling of moods. Unlike Bipolar I or Bipolar II, Cyclothymia does not involve major depressive, mixed or manic episodes. The cycles are between hypomanic symptoms and periods of depressive symptoms. They do need to cause significant social or occupational impairment or effect other functional areas. The periods between hypomania and depression are usually shorter in duration and may not come in regular cycles. There may also be more periods of “normal” mood between cycles. In many cases cyclothymia can be the beginning stages of what may develop into more severe forms of bipolar disorder. Treatment for Cyclothymia is similar to treatment for Bipolar Disorder.
