Doctors Disagree?

Dr. Fristad,

My daughter has been diagnosed with partial complex seizures and has also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Often the psychiatrist defers prescribing mood stabilizers to the neurologist and neurologists have doubted my daughters seizure symptoms and have referred us back to the psychiatrist. How do we get out of this futile loop? who is qualified to sort this out for us?

Thanks,

Nancy

Your situation certainly sounds frustrating!  It sounds like your treating professionals need to talk with each other.  Regardless of whether you are receiving care from one medical center or from several private practice groups, you and your daughter will benefit from the neurologist and psychiatrist consulting one another.  If you are receiving care at an academic medical center, perhaps you could ask if they would consider presenting your daughter as a case study in a Grand Rounds.
