Hypomania

Hypomania is a mild form of mania with similar symptoms but not the severity, impairment or duration of a full manic episode. Symptoms produce an observable change in the child’s ability to function and can be predictive of symptom escalation to mania or major depression. Some of the symptoms may be:

-- Slightly inflated self-esteem
-- Decreasing need for sleep. They gradually stay up later,
get up earlier, show need for less hours of sleep.
-- Increased need to talk or pressured speech.
-- Jumping from thought to thought with no clear connections,
flights of ideas.
-- Increased distractability, difficulty focussing on things that
have not been a problem before.
-- Increased goal-directed activities. This can be increased
obsession with being social or starting new projects.
-- Increase in risk-taking behaviors – hypersexual behaviors,
need to spend money, stealing.
-- Increased impulsive behaviors.
