May 3 Chat Part 4

Dr. Fristad:  school personnel often resonate to the concept that ADHD typically looks worse at school than at home, due to task demands.  Mood disorders, especially bpd, typically look worse at home than at school.

***faith1 has Quit [QUIT:]

Robin1:  it surprises me that he knows what is socially appropriate and not socially appropriate

Dr. Fristad:  it is good to locate and label strengths whenever and wherever you see them

Robin1:  for the longest time they saw him as this well behaved child

Dr. Fristad:  if he knows what is socially appropriate, you don’t need to teach that.  You just need to work on the reminders and incentives to BE socially appropriate!

***Dan has joined #Brainstorm

Learningmom_1bp11yo1:  hi Dan. Welcome to brainstorm chat.

Melba19:  hi Dan

Robin1:  but now school anxiety is hard, and he is refusing to go to school

Mom2aspclboy:  Hilo Dan

Robin1:  he now has to take half an Ativan to go to school now

Robin1:  hi Dan

Curlywhirly:  hello Dan

Dr. Fristad:  do you know what about school is the worst, and does he have a “special person” (e.g., counselor) he can meet with when the going gets rough?

Robin1:  I have been struggling with this and the staff.  I know one of his spec Ed teachers he just can’t stand

Robin1:  next year trying a new school that is a spec school and small class setting for him

Dr. Fristad:  Good!  Another favorite strategy this time of year is a big homemade calendar where kids can X off the last remaining days of school

Curlywhirly: that does sound fun

Learningmom_1bp11yo1:  oooh, I like that one

Scifinut:  Ms. 14 loves to do that

Robin1:  oh yes

Learningmom_1bp11yo1: may I ask about something else....?

Scifinut:  she has it at the end of her bed LOL

Melba19:  my kids have it counted down

Dr. Fristad:  and with every X, have them write in a summer calendar fun things they want to do

***Teri has joined #Brainstorm

Melbal19:  hi Teri

Robin1:  and then the homework war is over

Robin1:  hi Teri

Scifinut:  hi Teri

Curlywhirly:  hi Teri

Mom2aspclboy:  h’lo Teri

Dr. Fristad:  go for it (the new question)

Crackerjack:  Mr. 13 has taken it upon himself to use calendars like that for a few years now

Learningmom_1bp11yo1:  can u talk a little about the ways to judge can't from won’t? Your book talks about the fact that they aren’t synonymous....

Teri:  hello everyone

Dr. Fristad:  the can’t behaviors are when your child is  “past the point of no return.”  Usually parents talk about “the look in his eye” or “he’s gone” or something along those lines
