Finding Professional Help

Finding the right professional help is one of the first and most important choices we make in seeking help for our kids. Key points to remember when looking for professional help:

  • I am an equal partner in my child's medical treatment. I need to study up so I can help make decisions to best help my child.

  • If the professional is not responsive to my child's needs or does not treat me with respect, I can and should get second, third and however many opinions it takes until I feel my child is getting the help s/he needs.

  • Second, third, fourth and even 87th opinions are *good things*.

  • Charting is important! It provides keys to so many things in helping our kids get well.

  • Recognize the  to mental health care, such as communication problems with the doctors, and fix the ones that are within your control.
