Flights of Ideas/Racing Thoughts

Flights of ideas and racing thoughts are a common symptom of bipolar disorder. Often in mania the ideas are seen as being brilliant, quick flashes of inspiration that race here and there. The thoughts so quick that it is hard to capture them long enough to understand what they are. They can seem to jump from one point to another without being related in any way. As the symptom progresses the thoughts can become so fast and furious that they can become confusing and frustrating. This can contribute to irritability, distractibility and anger. Racing thoughts can also be seen in increasingly rapid speech. The person can think they are making perfect sense as they rapidly jump from one subject to another.

Racing thoughts can also occur in the depressive phase of the illness. These thoughts are darker, often centering around concerns and anxiety. Worries about self, doubts, concerns regarding school, relationships, etc. can circle endlessly and quickly. Racing thoughts centered around anxiety can cause rapid heart rates and a feeling of panicking.

Difficulty concentrating can be a symptom of someone experiencing racing thoughts or flights of ideas. With the thoughts in overdrive it can be difficult to focus on any one thing. Insomnia or trouble falling asleep can also be caused by racing thoughts. It is hard to relax enough to fall asleep with so many thoughts racing and crowding for attention.
