Reading

Teaching reading is one of the most daunting challenges of the early years of home education. There are literally hundreds of reading methods out there, and no way for the average parent to know which one will work for their child. Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons by Dr. Phyllis Haddox is a program that many families find successful and is a good place to start. For children who are struggling or who have known Learning Challenges Earobics is an excellent program as well. Explode the Code is another excellent reading resource. The Three Rs by Ruth Beechick is an excellent and gentle program to help introduce younger children to reading concepts.

As kids get older, the challenges of teaching reading change. Most kids have picked up the rudimentary skills of reading, but how is their comprehension? Can they read higher level materials? Reading Comprehension is a site with free printable reading comprehension worksheets. As children get older, reading is often taught as part of "Language Arts- Reading, Composition, Spelling, Grammar etc." Beyond the Code follows up on the things learned in the previous Explode the Code books. Reading Strands is a manual for parents to learn to discuss literature with children in a way that helps them expand their understanding and encourages exploration.

Beautiful Feet Books provide literature studies focusing on history where the children read interesting and informative books as well as classics for the purpose of learning US and world history.

Five In A Row is a literature unit study curricula for children 2 through 12 that encourages reading and the joy of books. Narration is a fantastic way to expand a child's understanding and comprehension.
