Stimulants

Stimulant medications are typically used to treat attention deficit disorders and to enhance cognition. These medications can be helpful for many but in the case of mood disorders, they can also cause problems. The types of problems typically include manic activation and aggression, occasionally psychosis may occur. These medications can be used to address attention difficulties in mood disordered patients but should be used with caution and only once mood stabilization has been reached and maintained for a lengthy period of time, usually 4-6 months. It should also be noted that very often when a mood disorder is stabilized, symptoms of attentional difficulties no longer exist as they were components of mania or hypomania.
