Stopping Suicide

One important concern in getting our kids well and keeping them alive in the future is taking a close look at a subject many of us would prefer to avoid. Bipolar can be fatal through suicide. Bipolar has a lifetime mortality rate through suicide of 18% which is greater than the mortality rate for childhood leukemia. It is a very real fear for those caring for loved ones at risk for suicide. It's important to bring to light the risks and resources that can be accessed. If you have concerns about your child or another loved one, this Suicide Risk Assessment can be helpful. Also the DBSA Suicide Prevention Handbook is very helpful.

If you need help with suicide right now you can call or visit the website Suicide Hotlines. Suicide Hotline 1 800 784 2433

Another helpful resource for dealing with suicide issues is http://yellowribbon.org/

The best suicide resource is one that can prevent suicidality in the first place. Here are three articles that support the use of Lithium for suicidality.

If you have had a loved one who has committed suicide please accept my most heart felt condolences. One resource for dealing with the grief is counseling services, another is survivor support groups. Please don't hesitate to find and use these resources. It is important to seek help in managing the grief you are feeling.

There is hope and there is help no matter how desparate things may seem.
